Sigurd Red Blend 2023 is a layered Barossa Valley red that brings together vibrancy, savoury detail and easy drinkability. This is a modern Australian blend built from Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cabernet and Lagrein, combining juicy red and dark fruit with spice, earthy nuance and fine grained tannins. It feels energetic and expressive, with plenty of depth while staying supple and beautifully balanced.

26/20/15/15/13/11% grenache/syrah/carignan/cabernet sauvignon/mouvèdre/lagrein. A mix of ferments, with wine pressed to hogsheads for four to five months' ageing, then assembled to foudre for another 10 to12 months. As usual, a lot of detail in variety and process, but the aim is harmony. All those varieties play their part, fruit rich but savoury, aromatic, mineral, earthy, spicy, structured. Lots of facets. Blackberries and pepper, umeboshi, beetroot powder, iron filings, some blue florals, iris and violet, boysenberry. Complex tannins, tight and granular but also linear, stretching long. It’s a little wild that wines of this patient integrity of process and detail are sold at this price. We’re richer for it. Marcus Ellis 

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Glace cherries, forest berries, cinnamon, star anise, clove, mulberry and blackberry, with hints of iodine, graphite and earthy spice.
Palate: Silky yet structured, with juicy red and dark fruit, savoury spice and a fine, elegant tannin profile that gives shape without heaviness.
Finish: Long, balanced and deeply drinkable, with a gentle earthy edge and persistent spice.

Winemaking

Each variety was fermented separately, with ferment times ranging from 10 to 30 days and around 10% whole bunch inclusion to build gentle lift and freshness. Native yeast fermentation took place in a mix of large wooden vats and stainless open fermenters, before the wine was pressed to mostly old large-format foudres and seasoned French oak barrels. It was matured for around 16 months in oak, then held in stainless steel before bottling with minimal sulphur.

About the Winery / History

Sigurd is the Barossa based project of Dan Piwko-Graham, focused on small batch wines from sustainably farmed vineyards across the Barossa and selected South Australian sites. The label draws its name from Dan’s great grandfather, Sigurd Thorwaldsen Gran, and reflects a modern, minimal intervention approach shaped by family history, regional fruit and a strong sense of place.
