Brewed at 9.2% ABV within the Abbey of Notre Dame de Saint Remy, it combines generous flavour with remarkable balance, creating a beer that feels rich and contemplative without becoming overly sweet or heavy.

Originally brewed as a Christmas beer during the 1950s and known as the Spéciale, Rochefort 8 became so popular that it earned a permanent place in the abbey range. About The Abbey, Brewery And Region

Trappistes Rochefort 8 is brewed at the Abbey of Notre Dame de Saint Remy near Rochefort in Belgium’s Province of Namur. The monastery was founded in 1230, while the first written records of brewing at the abbey date to 1595.

The monks live according to the Benedictine principle of prayer and work. Brewing became part of the monastery’s daily life, providing nourishing beer for the community while supporting the abbey and its charitable responsibilities.

The abbey has endured wars, fires, looting, epidemics and the upheaval of the French Revolution. The monks were forced to leave during the revolution, but monastic life was restored in 1887. A new brewery was built, and commercial beer sales began in 1910 to help support the community.

During the 1950s, the monks began developing the modern Rochefort range. Rochefort 8 was originally produced for Christmas before becoming a permanent release alongside Rochefort 6 and Rochefort 10. Brewing continues under monastic supervision, with every batch reviewed for quality before leaving the abbey.

Cellaring Potential

Trappistes Rochefort 8 is beautifully expressive now, but it can also develop further with careful cellaring. Over time, the dark fruit, caramel and spice can become softer and more integrated, while deeper notes of dried fruit, bread and gentle oxidation emerge.
