About The Wine

Torbreck RunRig Shiraz 2016 is one of the great modern Barossa reds, built from old dry grown vineyards and finished with a small addition of Viognier for extra perfume and lift. The 2016 vintage is rich, plush and intensely concentrated, yet beautifully balanced, with a velvety texture and impressive savoury detail. This is a powerful, cellar-worthy Shiraz that already shows tremendous class in the glass.

Destemmed, open fermented, 7 days on skins, matured for 30 months in French barriques (50% new) before blending trials determined 2% of viognier be blended in. One of the classic Torbreck wines, with the added benefits of the '15 vintage. It is a gorgeously deep pool of supple, mouthfilling/watering fruit flavours (impossible, I know, but it is). Seduction clinically confronts and comforts the consumer. Black fruits, licorice and a shaft of dark chocolate, plus oak, do the business. James Halliday.

A highly relevant collector release, RunRig 2016 received 100 points from The Wine Advocate and was also highlighted with 97 points from James Suckling and Huon Hooke in published release coverage.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Blackberry, blueberry, pencil shavings, dark plum and subtle floral lift.

Palate: Full bodied and palate-staining, with layers of dark berry fruit, plush texture and deep concentration. 

Finish: Long, savoury and seamless, with mocha, black olive and lingering dark fruit.

Serving Suggestions

A superb match for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison or aged hard cheeses.

Torbreck was founded with a vision to honour and preserve the Barossa Valley’s extraordinary old vineyards. The house is closely associated with Rhône inspired blends and old vine Barossa fruit, and RunRig stands as one of its most important flagship wines. The wine is often compared stylistically with Côte Rôtie, combining old vine Barossa Shiraz with a small proportion of Viognier to build fragrance, structure and complexity.

This is built for the long haul and should reward extended cellaring under good conditions. The 2016 vintage has the depth, structure and balance to evolve beautifully over many years.
