Tenuta Ulisse Montepulciano D'Abruzzo DOC 2024 is exactly the sort of Italian red that makes a weeknight dinner look considerably more organised than it really is.

Black cherry, blackberry and ripe red berries are the main event, with plenty of fruit and a soft, rounded feel through the palate. There is good body here, but the tannins are sweet and velvety rather than aggressive, so you can open it now without needing to find a decanter and pretend you planned ahead.

It is 100% Montepulciano, full flavoured, smooth and very easy to like. The winery keeps the maturation in stainless steel before bottling, which means the fruit stays right at the centre rather than disappearing behind a wall of oak.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Black cherry, blackberry, red berries and ripe plum.

Palate: Full and rounded with juicy dark fruit, fresh acidity and soft velvety tannins.

Finish: Long and smooth with lingering blackberry, cherry and a gentle savoury edge.

About The Winery

Tenuta Ulisse is based in Abruzzo on Italy’s Adriatic side, where Montepulciano has been doing a very good job of keeping Italian red drinkers happy for a long time.

The estate focuses heavily on the local varieties of Abruzzo, with Montepulciano sitting right at the heart of the range. This release is a straightforward expression of the grape, 100% Montepulciano with plenty of ripe fruit, body and softness, rather than one that spends years being introduced to increasingly expensive pieces of oak.

That makes it a very useful bottle. Enough character for someone who actually cares about wine, but approachable enough for someone who simply wants a good red with dinner.
