Te Mata Awatea Cabernets Merlot 2023 is a sophisticated and finely structured red blend that epitomises the elegance of Hawke’s Bay. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, it offers power and poise in perfect harmony, a seamless reflection of the Te Mata house style. Often described as the “little brother” to Coleraine, Awatea stands proudly on its own as one of New Zealand’s most consistently outstanding reds.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry layered with cedar, tobacco, and graphite.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, showing ripe black fruit, cocoa, and savoury spice framed by fine-grained tannins.
Finish: Long, elegant, and beautifully balanced with lingering notes of dark chocolate and cigar box.

Food Pairing / Serving Suggestions

Perfect with roast lamb, beef Wellington, or venison. Also exceptional with aged cheddar or mushroom-based dishes. Decant before serving to enhance aromatic complexity.

Te Mata Estate, established in 1896, is New Zealand’s oldest family-owned winery and a true icon of Hawke’s Bay.
