About The Distillery

Tamnavulin Distillery is located in the village of Tomnavoulin, in the Glenlivet area of Speyside, one of Scotland’s most famous whisky regions. Speyside is known for producing smooth, fruit driven single malts, often showing orchard fruit, honey, vanilla, malt sweetness and gentle spice rather than heavy peat smoke. Tamnavulin fits beautifully into this regional style, offering an approachable, mellow and easy drinking Speyside character.

The name Tamnavulin comes from Gaelic and means “mill on the hill”, a reference to the old carding mill that once stood on the distillery site. The original mill dates back centuries, and its wooden water wheel still forms part of the distillery’s story today. The distillery itself was built in 1966, during a period of strong growth in Scotch whisky production, with the aim of creating classic Speyside malt for blending as well as single malt whisky.

Tamnavulin closed in the mid 1990s, then reopened in 2007 after a major refurbishment. Since then, the distillery has become much better known as a single malt brand in its own right, especially for smooth cask finished whiskies such as Double Cask. The house style is sweet, soft and fruit forward, with American oak bringing vanilla, honey and orchard fruit, while sherry cask finishing adds roundness, dried fruit and gentle spice.

The surrounding Speyside landscape plays an important role in the whisky’s identity. This part of Scotland is home to many of the world’s most famous distilleries, with cool conditions, clean water sources and long whisky making tradition helping shape a refined and elegant style. Tamnavulin offers a lovely introduction to Speyside single malt, with plenty of smoothness, fruit and cask richness without being too heavy or smoky.
