Seghesio Barolo Castelletto 2021 is a beautiful example of why Nebbiolo from Piedmont has such a devoted following. It has all the perfume, complexity and structure you expect from a serious Barolo, but with a little more elegance and restraint than some of its bigger, more muscular neighbours.

Dried cherry, strawberry and rose petals lead the way, followed by orange peel, liquorice, mint and delicate earthy notes. The palate is medium bodied, vibrant and beautifully balanced, with fine structured tannins and fresh acidity giving the wine excellent length. There is plenty happening here, but nothing feels heavy or overdone.

This is a genuine single vineyard Barolo from the highly regarded 2021 vintage, with 92 points from Vinous and 92 points from Jeb Dunnuck. It delivers the elegance, complexity and ageing potential that make Barolo so appealing, without necessarily requiring the rather frightening price tag attached to some of the region's more famous names.

About The Winery

Fratelli Seghesio is a family owned producer based in Monforte d'Alba, one of the most respected villages in the Barolo region of Piedmont. The family focuses on traditional expressions of Nebbiolo, producing wines that capture the character of their vineyards while maintaining elegance, balance and excellent ageing potential.

The Castelletto vineyard is situated on the hillsides of Monforte d'Alba, where limestone rich soils and excellent exposure help produce wines with concentration, perfume and distinctive structure. The Barolo is matured for 24 months in large oak casks, allowing the wine to develop complexity without overwhelming the delicate aromatics of Nebbiolo.

The 2021 vintage shows a particularly refined side of Castelletto, with fragrant red fruit, floral notes and beautifully defined tannins.

There is something rather appealing about a Barolo that has all the credentials to be taken seriously but does not feel the need to shout about them. This is one of those wines.

Cellaring Potential

Seghesio Barolo Castelletto 2021 has excellent ageing potential, with the structure, acidity and fruit concentration to develop beautifully over the coming decade.

Recommended drinking window: 2026 to 2036.

The wine is approachable with some aeration now, although another year or two in the cellar should allow the tannins to soften and the savoury complexity to develop further.
