About The Vineyard And 2024 Vintage

The fruit was sourced from S.C. Pannell’s McLaren Vale vineyards, including the Olivers Road property that surrounds the winery. The wine represents the heart of the producer’s house style, preserving the natural breadth and richness of warm climate Shiraz while avoiding unnecessary heaviness or excessive oak.

The 2024 growing season began with a cool spring before finishing with a warm and dry autumn. These conditions produced red wines with expressive varietal aromas, natural acidity, balanced tannins and clearly defined medium bodied structure.

McLaren Vale’s Mediterranean climate and complex ancient geology provide excellent conditions for Shiraz. Warm, dry growing conditions encourage ripe blackberry and plum flavours, while cooling maritime influences help the grapes retain freshness, perfume and balance.

Winemaking

The grapes were picked on 21 February, with approximately 12 percent retained as whole bunches. The fruit was gently crushed and fermented in open top stainless steel vessels, with twice daily pump overs during 12 days on skins.

After gentle pressing and settling, the wine was transferred to older French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation. It was racked twice and bottled without adjustment or fining, preserving its fruit purity, natural texture and regional character.

S.C. Pannell was established by Stephen and Fiona Pannell in 2004 as a celebration of their adopted home of McLaren Vale. The wines are shaped by Stephen’s extensive winemaking experience and his belief that great wine should speak clearly of its vineyard, region and climate.

The winery combines established McLaren Vale varieties such as Shiraz and Grenache with Mediterranean grapes that thrive in the region’s warm and dry conditions. Across the range, the focus remains on freshness, balanced tannins, restrained oak and wines created to be enjoyed with food and good company.

Cellaring Potential
