Riegele Weizen Doppelbock Fruchtig & Stark is a rare top fermented Doppelbock with plenty of fruit, malt richness and serious weight behind it.

Ripe banana and soft yeast spice lead the way, followed by dark bread, caramel and toasted wheat. The palate is full and rounded, with the wheat keeping the beer smooth while the 8% ABV brings plenty of warmth and depth. Riegele describes it as chestnut coloured, unfiltered and strongly fruity, which sums it up nicely.

This is a great pick if you enjoy Bavarian wheat beer but want something much richer and more powerful. You still get the familiar banana and yeast character, but with the body and malt depth of a proper Doppelbock.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe banana, soft yeast, dark bread, caramel and gentle spice.

Palate: Full bodied and smooth with toasted wheat, rich malt, banana and soft caramel.

Finish: Long and warming with lingering fruit, dark malt and a gentle sweet edge.

About The Brewery

Brauhaus Riegele is based in Augsburg, Bavaria, and traces its brewing history back to 1386. The brewery remains strongly focused on traditional German beer styles, from Helles and Dunkel through to wheat beers and powerful Doppelbocks.

The Weizen Doppelbock is unusual because it is top fermented rather than brewed like a classic bottom fermented Doppelbock. That gives it more fruit and yeast character, while the higher original gravity and 8% ABV bring the richness and strength you expect from the style.

It is basically Hefeweizen after deciding to put on a winter coat and get considerably more serious.
