Rhône by Roger Sabon Côtes du Rhône 2023 is a seriously good little Rhône red from one of Châteauneuf du Pape’s benchmark producers. It has plenty of ripe fruit and generosity, but there is also enough savoury detail and freshness to stop it feeling heavy.

Dark raspberry, blackberry and black cherry lead the way, with liquorice, dried herbs, dark chocolate and peppery spice underneath. The palate is plush and smooth, with ripe tannins and a long, savoury finish. This is the sort of Côtes du Rhône that punches well above its price and is very easy to recommend.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Dark raspberry, black cherry, liquorice, dried herbs and peppery spice.

Palate: Rich and medium bodied with blackberry, raspberry, dark chocolate and sweet liquorice, supported by smooth ripe tannins.

Finish: Long and generous with lingering dark fruit, herbs, pepper and a gentle savoury edge.

About The Winery

Domaine Roger Sabon is a family run Southern Rhône estate established in 1952 and best known for its traditional Châteauneuf du Pape wines.

Rhône by Roger Sabon is the estate’s more approachable Côtes du Rhône, but it still carries plenty of the house style. The 2023 is made from 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault, giving it ripe fruit, spice and that soft, silky texture Roger Sabon does so well.

If you like Southern Rhône reds with plenty of flavour but do not want anything too heavy or overdone, this is a great bottle to have on hand.

Cellaring Potential

Rhône by Roger Sabon Côtes du Rhône 2023 is drinking beautifully now, but it has enough fruit and structure to develop nicely over the next four to five years. Drink now to around 2031 under good storage conditions.
