Pikes Luccio Sangiovese 2024 is a cracking Clare Valley take on one of Italy’s great red grapes. Dark cherry and raspberry lead the way, followed by plum, cranberry, cherry cola and a little spice. It is bright, juicy and medium bodied, with enough savoury character to keep things interesting without becoming too serious.

The palate has that lovely Sangiovese mix of ripe fruit, tart acidity and fine dry tannins. Dried herbs and subtle oak char sit underneath the fruit, giving the wine a bit more shape and making it feel properly complete.

Pikes has been working with Sangiovese in Clare Valley for nearly 30 years, and the 2024 is one of their strongest releases yet. It gives you plenty of Italian style character, but with a bright Australian freshness that makes it very easy to enjoy.

Aroma: Dark cherry, raspberry, cherry cola, subtle oak char and delicate potpourri florals.

Palate: Medium bodied with cherry, fleshy plum, cranberry, redcurrant and dried herbs, framed by fine persistent tannins.

Finish: Fresh and savoury with lingering red fruit, spice, herbs and a clean dry grip.

About The Winery

Pikes Wines is a family owned Clare Valley producer based at Polish Hill River and has been making wine since 1984. While the winery is best known for Riesling, it has also been one of the early champions of alternative varieties in the region, including Sangiovese.

The Luccio range takes its inspiration from southern European varieties, with a focus on wines that are bright, approachable and made for the table. Pikes has worked with Sangiovese for nearly three decades, and the 2024 shows why the variety has found such a comfortable home in Clare Valley.

It is polished enough to take seriously, but relaxed enough that you do not need to start explaining Tuscan subregions halfway through dinner.

Cellaring Potential

Pikes Luccio Sangiovese 2024 is drinking beautifully now, especially if you like bright red fruit and fine tannins. Pikes suggests it can also be cellared for up to five years, allowing the savoury side of the wine to develop further.
