Pikes Eastside Shiraz 2023 is a beautifully balanced Clare Valley Shiraz with plenty of fruit, but none of the heaviness that can make some Shiraz feel like hard work.

Maraschino cherry, mulberry, plum and blueberry lead the way, followed by charry oak, pie crust, nutmeg, five spice and a little anise. The palate is generous, but bright acidity keeps everything fresh, while fine velvety tannins give the wine a smooth, polished finish.

This is classic Clare Valley Shiraz from a producer that knows the region inside out. It is drinking very well now, but Pikes also gives it a cellaring window of 7 to 15 years, so it works just as well for the cellar as it does for dinner tonight.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Maraschino cherry, mulberry, charry oak, pie crust and warm baking spice.

Palate: Medium to full bodied with cherry, plum, blueberry and blackberry, followed by nutmeg, five spice and a touch of anise.

Finish: Long and smooth with bright acidity, savoury spice and fine velvety tannins.

About The Winery

Pikes Wines is a family owned Clare Valley producer based at Polish Hill River, with a strong reputation for both Riesling and Shiraz. The estate has become one of the region’s best known names by focusing on wines with freshness, structure and a clear sense of place.

The East side name refers to both the vineyard’s position on the eastern side of the Pikes estate and the winery’s location on the eastern side of Clare Valley. The cool 2023 season gave the fruit a long ripening period, helping build colour and flavour while holding onto excellent natural acidity.

It is polished, generous and very easy to understand, which is exactly what you want from good Clare Shiraz.

Cellaring Potential

Pikes Eastside Shiraz 2023 is drinking beautifully now, especially with a little air, but it has plenty of structure for the cellar. Pikes recommends 7 to 15 years of ageing potential under good storage conditions.
