About The Wine

Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz 2012 is a deeply expressive Barossa Valley Shiraz with richness, polish and impressive concentration. Built as a single region counterpart to Penfolds’ more multi regional reds, it leans into plush fruit, fine texture and French oak maturity, giving the wine a generous, full bodied style with real presence. With bottle age now adding extra savoury complexity, it is in a very appealing drinking window while still holding the structure to continue rewarding careful cellaring.

May explain why Kalimna Bin 28 is the least of the Bin series reds, for this wine takes the finest shiraz from the Barossa Valley once Grange has had its choice. The call is made early, because this wine spends 16 months in French oak hogsheads (75% new), finishing its ferment in that oak, separating it at birth from Grange in American oak. The bouquet abounds with black fruits, with sub notes of dark chocolate, licorice and some charcuterie. The palate is drop dead gorgeous, a curious description given its strongly savoury flavour range, but it achieves the unlikely. As with all these wines, the tannin structure is exceptional, the length prodigious.

Aroma: Intense blackberry, dark plum, praline, cinnamon, roasted chestnut, vanilla and espresso notes.

Palate: Dense and richly flavoured, with inky blackberry, dark plum, mulberry, velvety texture and layered spicy oak complexity.

Finish: Long, chocolaty and mineral, with lingering fruit sweetness, savoury depth and polished tannins.

Serving Suggestions

A superb match for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, slow cooked beef, venison or aged hard cheeses.

About the Winery / Producer

Penfolds RWT was created as a Barossa Valley Shiraz matured in French oak, offering a more opulent and fleshy expression alongside the house’s traditional flagship reds. The wine was first launched with the 1997 vintage, and the Bin 798 designation was added from the 2016 vintage. The 2012 release continues that house style, drawing on fruit selected for aromatic quality and plush texture.

Cellaring Potential

This is built for the long haul and should continue to evolve well under good cellaring conditions. Its concentration, balance and oak structure suggest it still has plenty of life ahead, even as it drinks beautifully now.
