Nick Spencer Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2024 is a refined cool climate Chardonnay from the high country of New South Wales. It brings together ripe stone fruit, citrus freshness, gentle oak and beautiful texture, while still holding the crisp line Tumbarumba Chardonnay is known for.

The 2024 vintage shows white peach, green apple, citrus, cashew, slate and crushed rock notes, with a creamy palate shaped by oak and amphora maturation. It is richer in style, but still bright, precise and refreshing, making it a lovely choice for those who enjoy Chardonnay with both flavour and finesse.

Expect an amalgam of lavender, lime curd, stone fruit, citrus, toffee brittle studded with roasted almonds and lots of spicy oak. It’s a little flinty and moreish, too. The palate is contained, tight and precise, even if layered ever so lightly with some nutty, savoury lees and plenty of brisk acidity, which is highly refreshing and uplifting. This is a beautiful chardonnay. It’s highly textural, and flavoursome, and charismatic, and yet it’s all energy and drive too. Honey, cream, white peach, white flowers, mango skin, custard powder and nectarine flavours put on a show that is both fleshy and flamboyant. It’s long through the finish and meticulous at every turn, and yet throughout there’s just so much going on. Wonderful wine. - Campbell Mattinson

Tumbarumba is one of Australia’s most exciting cool climate regions for Chardonnay. Its altitude, mountain influence and cool nights help fruit ripen slowly while preserving natural acidity. This gives Chardonnay from the region its bright citrus character, stone fruit detail, fine structure and mineral freshness.

The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from the Maragle Valley, just north of Mount Kosciuszko and near the Victorian border. The vineyard sits around 500 metres above sea level, with warm days followed by sharply cooling nights as cold mountain air moves through the valley. This unique setting helps build full flavour at lower sugar levels, giving the wine depth without heaviness.

The fruit was hand picked, lightly pressed to French oak puncheons and amphoras, then matured for 14 months on gross lees before bottling. This careful approach adds texture, savoury complexity and polish while keeping the wine fresh, balanced and expressive.

Cellaring Potential

Nick Spencer Tumbarumba Chardonnay 2024 is drinking beautifully now for its citrus, stone fruit and creamy texture. It can also be cellared over the medium term. Drink now to 2030 under good storage conditions. With time, expect the fresh peach and citrus notes to develop into almond, toast, lemon curd and savoury mineral complexity.
