Leconfield McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 is a rich and polished South Australian Shiraz showing the generosity and depth McLaren Vale does so well. The 2022 vintage produced wines of opulence and richness, and this release delivers plenty of dark fruit, spice, chocolate and structure.

Expect ripe plum, blackberry, dark cherry, mocha, dark chocolate and gentle oak spice, balanced by firm fine tannins and a chalky edge. It is full flavoured and deeply textured, yet still elegant and well focused.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Plum, blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, mocha, vanilla, nutmeg and well handled oak.

Palate: Full bodied and richly textured with plummy spice fruit, dark chocolate, blackberry, fine tannins and integrated oak.

Finish: Long and balanced with lingering dark fruit, spice, cocoa and a firm chalky tannin line.

There’s a suaveness of feel here, tannins sleek, rounded, the palate supple and harmonious, yet with lineal intent. The flavours run deep, expressive of those clay soils, but there’s nothing ponderous here. Black plum, dark berries, ground anise, worn leather, vanilla bean, cloves, allspice and cacao nibs. Leconfield is part of the Hamilton family wine story, a family connected to South Australian wine growing since 1837. The Leconfield estate itself was founded in Coonawarra in 1974 by Sydney Hamilton, who set out to create elegant, long lived wines from one of Australia’s great red wine regions.

McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s classic Shiraz regions, shaped by warm Mediterranean conditions, cooling coastal influence and a long history of red wine growing. The region is known for Shiraz with ripe dark fruit, plush texture, savoury spice and smooth tannin structure.

Leconfield’s McLaren Vale Shiraz is built around richness and balance. The oak is used to support the fruit rather than dominate it, adding subtle spice, mocha and chocolate notes while allowing the regional plum and blackberry character to stay at the centre.

Leconfield McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 is drinking beautifully now, especially with decanting, but it also has the structure to age well. Drink now to 2032 under good storage conditions. With time, expect the dark fruit to develop into richer notes of leather, cocoa, dried spice and savoury earth.
