Konpira Maru Square Root Of Five Sangiovese 2025 is a vibrant, lightly structured red from Victoria’s King Valley. It combines juicy raspberry and berry compote flavours with rhubarb, peach skin, savoury tannins and bright acidity.

This is a fresher interpretation of Sangiovese, offering the variety’s natural cherry fruit, savoury character and acidity without the weight or firm oak structure often associated with more traditional examples. It is enjoyable slightly cool, making it a great red for warmer weather and relaxed drinking.

About The Vineyard And King Valley Region

The fruit for the 2025 Square Root Of Five comes from La Cantina in Victoria’s King Valley. The region follows the King River from the warmer valley floor towards the cooler, elevated vineyards of the Victorian Alps.

The King Valley has become particularly well known for Italian grape varieties, including Sangiovese. Warm daytime conditions help develop ripe cherry and berry flavours, while cooler evenings preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. These conditions are well suited to producing lively, fragrant Sangiovese with both fruit generosity and savoury structure.

Winemaking

The grapes were wild fermented in small open vats at Konpira Maru’s mountain winery in Whitlands. As much whole berry fruit as possible was retained, helping preserve perfume, freshness and juicy fruit character.

The ferment received gentle hand plunging twice daily. Different portions were pressed throughout an 18 day maceration period, creating a combination of ruby coloured, lightly extracted wine and more savoury portions with longer skin contact.

These components were blended after fermentation and matured for six months in older French oak. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a small addition of sulphur. This minimal intervention approach preserves the wine’s natural texture, fruit and energy.

About Konpira Maru

Konpira Maru began when friends Al and Sam decided to create interesting, character filled wines that remained affordable enough to enjoy during the week. Their first vintage was produced in 2014 and amounted to just 600 bottles.

The winery now works with growers across Victoria and Queensland, with a particular interest in lesser known and predominantly cool climate vineyard regions. The wines are made with minimal intervention and careful attention, focusing on freshness, personality and drinkability.

In 2016, Konpira Maru took responsibility for its own vineyard at Whitlands, high above the King Valley. The vineyard is farmed organically and surrounded by subalpine eucalypt forest, while the mountain winery provides a cool environment for gentle fermentation and maturation.

The Story Behind The Name

The name Square Root Of Five refers to the golden ratio, a mathematical proportion found throughout nature, architecture, art and music. It is a typically playful name from Konpira Maru, reflecting the winery’s creative approach to labels and wine making.
