Dominique Portet Fontaine Cabernets 2024 is a beautifully polished Yarra Valley red that delivers classic Cabernet character without feeling heavy or old fashioned.

Blackcurrant and juicy red fruit lead the way, with violet, cedar and subtle savoury notes adding extra detail. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and energetic, with silky tannins and a long, balanced finish. Halliday Wine Companion awarded the 2024 95 Points, calling it one of the Yarra Valley’s best buys This is a very easy bottle to recommend if you like Cabernet with freshness and finesse rather than sheer weight. It has enough structure to satisfy serious red drinkers, but it is supple enough to enjoy now without waiting years for it to soften.

A blend of 60/29/6/5% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/cabernet franc. Matured in 15% French oak. An excellent edition of this perennially good and well-priced wine. A deep, bright crimson purple. Explodes from the glass with ripe blackcurrant fruit, violets and a hint of cedar. Medium bodied, with excellent verve and silky (for cabernet) long chained tannins. Great now and over the next four to six years. One of the Yarra's absolutely best buys. Philip Rich

Aroma: Blackcurrant, redcurrant and violets with subtle cedar and gentle savoury notes.

Palate: Medium bodied with bright berry fruit, fresh acidity and smooth, silky tannins.

Finish: Long and refined with lingering cassis, cedar and a fresh savoury edge.

Serving Suggestions

A natural match with roast beef, lamb, grilled steak and slow cooked beef dishes.

It also works beautifully with roast chicken, mushrooms, charcuterie and firm cheeses. The freshness and fine tannins make it surprisingly versatile for a Cabernet blend.

About The Winery

Dominique Portet comes from a family with generations of French winemaking behind it and established his Yarra Valley winery with a strong focus on elegant, European inspired wines.

Fontaine Cabernets brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, with the 2024 sourced from Yarra Valley vineyards around Coldstream and Gruyere. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its structure, Merlot adds softness, while Malbec and Cabernet Franc bring lift and freshness.

The 2024 also won Best Cabernet Blend at the 2025 Yarra Valley Wine Show, which is a pretty strong endorsement for a wine built around drinkability rather than showing off.

Cellaring Potential

Drinking beautifully now, with plenty of bright fruit and silky tannin.

Halliday’s review suggests enjoying it over the next four to six years, so well stored bottles should develop comfortably through around 2030 to 2032.

Collector’s Note

The 2024 Fontaine Cabernets received 95 Points from Philip Rich for Halliday Wine Companion.

It also won Best Cabernet Blend at the 2025 Yarra Valley Wine Show and received a Gold Medal with 95 Points at the 2025 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards.
