Clarence House Estate Pinot Noir 2024 is a fragrant and beautifully composed Tasmanian Pinot Noir with red cherry, dark berries, dried flowers, forest undergrowth and gentle spice. The palate offers impressive fruit concentration while remaining fresh and finely structured, with supple tannins carrying the wine through a long finish.

You'll love this wine if you enjoy Pinot Noir with generous fruit, silky texture and genuine cool climate character. It has enough richness and immediate appeal to enjoy now, yet the freshness and fine tannin structure give it the potential to develop gracefully in the cellar. It is a versatile choice for dinner parties, special occasions or anyone looking to explore premium Tasmanian Pinot Noir without moving into the heavier reserve style.

Halliday Wine Companion - 93 Points

A vibrantly coloured Coal River Valley pinot noir that shows inviting aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry and juicy plum along with hints of five-spice, dried citrus rind, boysenberry, undergrowth, char siu, pomegranate, dried meats and earth. Supple and medium-bodied, with a bright, crunchy acid line, fine tannins and no shortage of pure fruit as it travels across the palate. Dave Brookes

Serving Suggestions

Serve slightly below room temperature in a generous Pinot Noir glass. Allow around twenty to thirty minutes in the glass or a decanter to reveal more of the floral perfume, fruit and savoury detail.

Pair with roast duck, grilled salmon, roast chicken, pork, mushroom risotto, charred vegetables or dishes featuring thyme and forest mushrooms. Its combination of fresh acidity and supple tannins also makes it an excellent match for charcuterie and soft cheeses.

About The Vineyard And Region

Clarence House Estate is located at Clarence Plains, near Cambridge in southern Tasmania. The vineyard sits on north east facing slopes in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges, between Hobart and the Coal River Valley.

The estate occupies a distinctive site with Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils, low annual rainfall and excellent exposure to sunlight. These conditions allow Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity, perfume and fine tannin structure.

Pinot Noir is planted across six individual vineyard blocks using a range of clones. Combining fruit from these blocks creates greater complexity, bringing together red fruit, darker berries, fragrance, spice and savoury vineyard character.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested from the Clarence House estate and fermented using wild yeast. A small portion of whole bunch fruit was included to add perfume, spice and additional structure.

The wine was matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques and puncheons. This restrained use of oak builds texture and complexity while allowing the fruit, floral character and natural freshness of the vineyard to remain central.

About Clarence House Estate

The historic Clarence House homestead was built in 1830 on land originally used as a market garden for Hobart. David Kilpatrick and his family acquired the property and began planting vines on the north east facing slopes in 1998.

The estate now has approximately 12 hectares under vine, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay forming the heart of the vineyard. The remaining plantings include Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Tempranillo.

Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb make the Clarence House wines at the nearby Pooley winery in Cambridge. Their approach focuses on purity, finesse and vineyard expression, supported by careful hand harvesting, wild fermentation and considered oak maturation.

Clarence House has developed a strong reputation for premium Tasmanian Pinot Noir. Its 2021 Block 1 Pinot Noir was named Australia’s Best Pinot Noir at the 2022 Australian Pinot Noir Challenge, highlighting the quality of the vineyard and the detailed work taking place across the estate.

Cellaring Potential

Delicious now for its bright berry fruit, floral perfume and supple tannins. It should also develop beautifully over five to eight years, gaining greater notes of forest floor, dried herbs, spice and earthy complexity.
