About the Winery / Region

Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829 in the village of Aÿ, one of the most important grand cru strongholds for Pinot Noir. From its earliest years, the house established a reputation for producing Champagnes of depth, structure and longevity, a philosophy that remains unchanged nearly two centuries later.

A defining chapter in Bollinger’s history came under the leadership of Lily Bollinger, who guided the house from 1941 to 1971 and became one of Champagne’s most iconic figures. Her famous quote  “I drink my Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad… otherwise I never touch it unless I’m thirsty” perfectly captures the confident, uncompromising Bollinger spirit. Under her stewardship, Bollinger expanded its vineyard holdings, strengthened its reserve wine program and cemented its status as one of Champagne’s great houses.

Bollinger is one of the very few major Champagne producers to remain family-owned and to own the majority of its vineyards, with a strong emphasis on grand and premier cru sites. Pinot Noir dominates these holdings and forms the backbone of Bollinger’s powerful, structured house style.

Tradition is central to Bollinger’s identity. The house continues to ferment much of its base wine in small, seasoned oak barrels,  a rare and labour-intensive practice that adds texture, depth and subtle oxidative complexity. Complementing this is Bollinger’s extraordinary reserve wine library, with older wines stored in magnums under cork, sometimes for decades. This meticulous approach gives Special Cuvée its remarkable consistency, richness and complexity year after year.

Special Cuvée also spends significantly longer ageing on lees than Champagne regulations require, resulting in finer bubbles, greater mouthfeel and enhanced aromatic depth. It is Champagne made the hard way and it shows in every glass.
