Bass River 1835 Chardonnay 2024 is a lovely cool climate Chardonnay from South Gippsland, with plenty of ripe fruit and texture but still a really clean line of acidity holding everything together.

Ripe peach and pear lead the way, followed by lemon, honeycomb, roasted almond and a little spice. The palate has some creamy richness from oak and lees ageing, but it never feels heavy. Tangy citrus and lively acidity keep the wine brisk and focused right through the finish.

This is a premium Gippsland Chardonnay from a small family producer, with real texture and detail, but none of the overdone oak or buttery weight that can make Chardonnay hard work. It is polished enough for a special bottle, but still very easy to enjoy now.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Ripe peach, pear, honeycomb, lemon butter, roasted almond and gentle spice.

Palate: Medium bodied and textural with pear, tangy lemon, almond and subtle toast, balanced by lively acidity.

Finish: Brisk and linear with lingering citrus, almond, spice and a clean savoury edge.

About The Winery

Bass River is a small family owned winery in South Gippsland, run by the Butera family. The estate sits between the Bass River and the southern end of the Strzelecki Ranges, where cool conditions and nearby maritime influence help produce wines with freshness, balance and plenty of regional character.

The 1835 range is Bass River’s premium collection, made from selected estate grown fruit and designed to show the best of the vineyard. The 2024 Chardonnay was fermented in oak puncheons, then matured on fine lees for 10 months, adding texture and complexity while keeping the fruit and acidity clear.

Cellaring Potential

Bass River 1835 Chardonnay 2024 is drinking beautifully now, but it has enough acidity and structure to develop further. A drinking window through to around 2030 is a good guide under proper storage conditions.
