Archie Rose Triple Smoked Single Malt Australian Whisky is not subtle, and that is rather the point.

This is one of the smokiest whiskies Archie Rose has made, but instead of copying Islay and throwing peat at the problem, they have gone very Australian about it. The barley, the casks and even the water are all smoked with native stringybark, giving the whisky a dry campfire character rather than that medicinal, seaweed heavy style you sometimes get from heavily peated Scotch.

There is smoked bacon, bonfire ember and charred lemon, but also golden syrup, pineapple, roasted macadamia and a little floral lift. The palate starts sweet with honey and baked citrus, then the smoke slowly builds until it takes over the finish. If your idea of a relaxing evening involves sitting near a wood fire while somebody cooks something slightly too enthusiastically on the barbecue, you are already halfway there.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Smoked bacon, campfire, golden syrup, roasted macadamia, charred lemon and pineapple.

Palate: Honeyed and structured with baked citrus, cured meats, salt, florals and steadily building wood smoke.

Finish: Long, dry and smoky with charred timber, salinity and lingering savoury notes.

About The Distillery

Archie Rose is based in Sydney and has spent the last decade proving Australian whisky does not need to behave like Scottish whisky to be taken seriously.

Triple Smoked is probably one of the clearest examples of that thinking. Most smoked whisky gets its character from smoked barley. Archie Rose decided that was apparently not enough, so they also smoked the oak casks and the water with native Australian stringybark. Three separate sources of smoke feels slightly excessive until you taste it, at which point the logic becomes considerably clearer.

The result is distinctly Australian. Think dry wood fire, charred meat, honey and citrus rather than iodine and coastal peat. Traditionalists may raise an eyebrow. They will probably still finish the glass.

Collector’s Note

Triple Smoked Single Malt is a new release from Archie Rose and sits within the distillery’s limited release collection. Its use of stringybark smoked malt, smoked casks and smoked water makes it a genuinely unusual Australian whisky and an interesting bottle for anyone collecting modern local single malts.
