Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen takes the brewery’s famous smoked character and drops it into a traditional Bavarian wheat beer style.

That means you get the familiar banana, clove and soft wheat notes of a Weizen, but layered with beechwood smoke, toasted grain and a little caramel underneath. The palate is smooth and lively, with gentle fruit, soft spice and creamy carbonation keeping the smoke from becoming too heavy.

This is one of the more unusual beers in the Schlenkerla range. It combines two very traditional German styles, Rauchbier and Hefeweizen, into something that is genuinely distinctive without losing the easy drinking character of a good wheat beer.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Banana, clove, beechwood smoke, toasted wheat and subtle caramel.

Palate: Smooth and medium bodied with soft wheat, ripe banana, gentle spice and a layered smoky malt character.

Finish: Soft and lingering with clove, toasted grain, light caramel and a gentle smoky edge.

About The Brewery

Schlenkerla is based in Bamberg, Germany, and is one of the world’s best known producers of traditional smoked beer.

The Weizen is brewed in the classic wheat beer style, but uses Schlenkerla’s smoked malt to give the beer its distinctive Rauchbier character. The wheat brings softness, fruit and spice, while the smoked barley adds depth and that unmistakable Bamberg signature.

It is a clever combination because the banana and clove notes soften the smoke rather than competing with it. The result is richer and more unusual than a standard Hefeweizen, but still bright enough to stay refreshing.

This is probably the Schlenkerla to try if you like wheat beer but want something with a bit more personality. And by “a bit more”, we mean smoke.
