Umani Ronchi Podere Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2024 is a classic Italian red that is full of flavour but still really easy to enjoy. Black cherry, plum and wild berries lead the way, with a little dried herb and savoury spice adding extra interest. It's generous without feeling too heavy, which makes it a great everyday Italian red.

The palate has ripe fruit, fresh acidity and lightly firm tannins, with a dry, savoury finish that keeps everything nicely balanced. James Suckling awarded the 2024 vintage 91 points, while Eric Guido for Vinous gave it 90 points, making this a seriously good value Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

Aroma: Black cherry, Morello cherry, plum, wild berries, violets and gentle herbs.

Palate: Medium to full bodied with ripe plum, cherry and berry fruit, fresh acidity and lightly firm tannins.

Finish: Dry and savoury with lingering dark fruit, herbs and a subtle mineral edge.

About The Winery

Umani Ronchi is one of the best known producers of central Italy, with vineyards across both the Marche and Abruzzo. The family owned winery has a long history of working with traditional Italian varieties and has become particularly well known for wines that combine regional character with excellent drinkability.

Podere was first produced in 1993 and is made from 100 percent Montepulciano, with fruit sourced mainly from vineyards in the provinces of Chieti and Teramo. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented in stainless steel and then matured for around four months in steel before a short period in bottle. This keeps the wine focused on fresh fruit rather than oak.

This is a great bottle for anyone who enjoys Italian reds with plenty of fruit and character but does not want anything too heavy or overly tannic.

Cellaring Potential

Umani Ronchi Podere Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2024 is drinking really well now and is designed to be enjoyed while the fruit is fresh and vibrant. It should comfortably develop over the next three to four years under good storage conditions.
