About The Vineyard And Region

The Tempranillo is grown in organically farmed estate vineyards in Uclés, within the central Spanish region of Castile. The vineyards sit at elevations between approximately 700 and 900 metres above sea level, where warm, sunny days encourage ripe fruit flavours and cold nights help retain acidity, freshness and aromatic definition.

The fruit is associated with the Finca Carbonero vineyard, where vines grow in loamy clay soils. These soils provide moisture retention during the dry growing season while naturally controlling vine vigour and supporting concentrated fruit development.

The continental climate brings hot summers, cold winters and a marked difference between daytime and evening temperatures. These conditions are particularly well suited to Tempranillo, allowing the variety to develop ripe cherry and berry flavours without losing freshness.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested during the cooler hours of the morning and transferred quickly to the winery. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.

The wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately eight to ten days, providing colour, flavour and gentle tannin without excessive extraction. It then rests in stainless steel for around six months before bottling.

No oak is used, preserving the vivid red fruit, herbal character and natural freshness of the high altitude Tempranillo.

About Mesta And Bodegas Fontana

Mesta is produced at Fontana Bodegas and Viñedos in Fuente de Pedro Naharro, Cuenca. The wines are created with a focus on organically grown Spanish varieties, sustainable vineyard management and minimal intervention in the winery.

The name Mesta comes from the powerful medieval association of shepherds that once controlled the traditional routes used to move livestock across Castile. These historic pathways, known as cañadas, continue to cross the landscape, and migrating flocks still pass through areas surrounding the vineyards.

This connection between agriculture, history and the natural environment is reflected in the way the vineyards are managed. They are treated as integrated ecosystems, protecting old oak trees, native birds, soil health and local biodiversity.
