“Rich vanilla milk stout with chocolate, marshmallow sweetness and a smooth creamy finish.”

Hargreaves Hill Babooshka Vanilla Milk Stout is one of those beers that sits somewhere between stout and dessert, and does it very comfortably.

Vanilla, chocolate and soft roasted malt lead the way, with lactose adding a creamy sweetness and a rounded texture through the palate. There is plenty of richness here, but the 6% ABV keeps it from becoming too heavy, making it indulgent without turning into a full evening commitment.

This is a great pick if you like sweeter stouts with plenty of flavour. Think chocolate, vanilla, nougat and marshmallow rather than aggressive roast or bitterness.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted malt and soft caramel.

Palate: Smooth and creamy with chocolate, marshmallow, vanilla and gentle roast.

Finish: Sweet and rounded with lingering vanilla, cocoa and soft roasted malt.

About The Brewery

Hargreaves Hill is based in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and has built a strong following for both its core beers and more adventurous seasonal releases.

Babooshka first appeared as a small draught release before becoming one of the brewery’s more recognisable seasonal beers. The combination of vanilla and lactose gives it a soft dessert style profile, with earlier releases showing marshmallow, nougat, coconut and chocolate notes.

It is not the beer for anyone looking for a dry, stern stout. Babooshka is much happier leaning into the pudding menu.

Serving Suggestions

A very good match with chocolate desserts, brownies, tiramisu, vanilla ice cream or sticky date pudding.

It also works well on its own after dinner, which saves you having to decide whether you wanted a beer or dessert in the first place.
