William Downie Gippsland Pinot Noir 2024 is a beautifully structured, cool-climate red from the heart of Gippsland.
Sourced from two premier sites, Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek (planted 1998) and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon (planted 2008), this wine reflects unique volcanic and damp climate terroir. Winemaker Bill Downie, a Burgundy trained veteran and pioneer of minimal intervention in Australia, crafts the Pinot to express purity and place with finesse.
Tasting Notes
Lifted aromas of violets, red currant, sour cherry, and wild strawberry segue into subtle graphite, earth, and potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied yet taut, with finely tuned tannins delivering tension and grip without heaviness. A mineral-driven freshness balances the plush red fruit, while savoury cedar and spicy cedar notes add complexity. Excellent drinking now through 2033 (6–8 years of cellar potential).
Halliday Wine Companion - 95 Points
Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Jane Faulkner
