About The Brewery, History And Region

The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan sits high above the historic town of Freising in Bavaria and lays claim to being the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world.

Its story stretches back to 725, when Saint Corbinian and his companions founded a Benedictine monastery on Weihenstephan Hill. Hops were being cultivated around the monastery by the eighth century, and in 1040 Abbot Arnold secured the official right to brew and sell beer. That year is recognised as the beginning of the Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery.

The centuries that followed were anything but easy. The monastery survived fires, wars, plague, famine and repeated destruction, yet the monks continued rebuilding and refining their brewing craft. When the monastery was dissolved in 1803, the brewery eventually became part of the Bavarian state and later took the name Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan.

Today the brewery remains on Weihenstephan Hill in Freising, just north of Munich. It sits alongside the Weihenstephan science centre of the Technical University of Munich, creating a unique combination of nearly one thousand years of brewing tradition and modern brewing science.

Freising itself is one of Bavaria’s oldest towns, surrounded by the Upper Bavarian landscape with views toward the Alps. Beer is deeply woven into the culture of this part of Germany, and Weihenstephan Pilsner is a beautiful example of that tradition with its clean malt, elegant Hallertau hop character and precise bitter finish.
