Aecht Schlenkerla Rachbier Helles Marzen Bottle 500ml

“Bright Bamberg Rauchbier with beechwood smoke, toasted malt, gentle caramel and a crisp bitter finish.”

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Helles Märzen takes the unmistakable Schlenkerla smoke character and puts it into a brighter, slightly softer Märzen style.

Made with a lighter smoked malt dried over an open beechwood fire, it pours a brilliant amber colour with aromas of campfire smoke, toasted grain, bread crust and gentle caramel. The palate is smoother than the classic Schlenkerla Märzen, but interestingly the smoky aroma is even more pronounced. At 5.1% ABV, it remains balanced and surprisingly refreshing despite all that smoke.

This gives Schlenkerla fans a genuinely different take on the brewery's famous Rauchbier style. It has the traditional beechwood smoke you expect, but the lighter malt brings more freshness and lets that smoky aroma stand out even more clearly.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Pronounced beechwood smoke, toasted malt, bread crust, gentle caramel and subtle herbal hops.

Palate: Smooth and medium bodied with toasted grain, soft malt sweetness and a distinctive smoky character.

Finish: Crisp and balanced with lingering smoke, toasted malt and clean hop bitterness.

About The Brewery

Schlenkerla is based in Bamberg, Germany, and is one of the world's most famous producers of traditional smoked beer. The brewery continues to smoke its own malt over an open fire, preserving a brewing tradition that largely disappeared elsewhere after smoke free malt drying became widespread.

The Helles Märzen uses a lighter Rauchmalz than the classic Märzen, although it is still smoked over open beechwood. This gives the beer its brighter amber colour and smoother malt character while maintaining the unmistakable aroma that has made Schlenkerla famous around the world.

It is a clever little twist on the house style. Slightly gentler in flavour, even smokier on the nose. Apparently Schlenkerla's idea of taking things down a notch still involves quite a lot of smoke.
