The Standish Wine Co Lamella Shiraz 2023 is a rare and highly sought after Eden Valley Shiraz from one of Australia’s most respected small producers. The 2023 release is 100 percent Shiraz, with fruit drawn mainly from the historic Stonegarden Vineyard near Springton, supported by a smaller portion from Hutton Vale.

This is a powerful but beautifully composed Shiraz, showing blue fruits, dark plum, red berry lift, exotic spice, purple florals, white pepper, meadow herbs and a cool Eden Valley mineral line. The wine carries impressive depth, but it is not simply about size. It has perfume, energy, fine tannins and remarkable length.

The 2023 vintage has received major critical praise, including 97 points from Halliday Wine Companion, 98 plus points from Erin Larkin and 99 points from James Suckling. It is listed at 14.9 percent ABV and sealed under natural cork and wax.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Blueberry, dark plum, raspberry, violets, white pepper, liquorice, spice, dried herbs and crushed stone.

Palate: Full bodied, intense and finely structured with layers of blue and black fruit, savoury spice, mineral depth, silky tannins and cool climate lift.

Finish: Very long and composed with lingering plum, spice, floral notes, cocoa, pepper and Eden Valley mineral detail.

This year's Lamella, an Eden Valley wine, sees the majority of the shiraz sourced from the epic Stonegarden vineyard down near Springton, with a smaller proportion of fruit from Hutton Vale. Last year it was the other way around, but vintages are like that. The fruit, again at its core pure dark plum and blue fruits, has some redder shades in play, with plenty of exotic spice, meadow herbs, purple floral tones and that Eden Valley sage thing going on and the thinest wisp of spearmint rising from the depths. I love this wine's powdered granitic heft and mineral cadence, the wink of Campari and bunchy nuance done just right and its composed 'Eden Valleyness'. It's lovely. Dave Brookes

Serving Suggestions

Decant for at least two hours before serving. Best enjoyed with premium steak, slow cooked lamb, roast beef, mushroom dishes, chargrilled vegetables, aged cheddar or rich winter cooking.

About The Producer

The Standish Wine Company was founded in 1999 by Dan Standish, a sixth generation Barossan with deep family roots in the region. Before building his own label, Dan worked at Torbreck, and his wines have since become some of the most sought after expressions of modern Barossa and Eden Valley Shiraz.

Standish produces only four flagship wines each year: The Standish, The Relic, The Schubert Theorem and Lamella. Each wine is focused on a special vineyard source, with the range built around old vine Shiraz, purity of fruit, vineyard expression and serious cellaring potential.

Lamella is the Eden Valley expression in the Standish range. Compared with the deeper Barossa Valley bottlings, Lamella often shows a cooler, more lifted profile, with floral perfume, blue fruits, white pepper, savoury herbs and granitic mineral detail. The 2023 release captures that beautifully, offering power and concentration with elegance, freshness and finesse.

The Standish Wine Co Lamella Shiraz 2023 is already compelling with extended decanting, but it is built for long term cellaring. Enjoy from now to 2043 under excellent storage conditions. With time, expect the blue and black fruit to develop into deeper notes of leather, dried herbs, cured meat, cocoa, spice, earth and savoury mineral complexity.

Lamella is one of the most collectible wines in the Standish portfolio and a benchmark Eden Valley Shiraz.
