Laphroaig is a distillery whose malts are massively individual and utterly distinctive. The distillery was founded in 1810 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on what was originally a family run farm in a small bay on the southernmost tip of Islay. Laphroaig’s unique flavour comes in part from its vicinity to the coast and the high moss content of its peat, which is processed in the distillery’s own floor maltings.

To get the most out of the whisky – to really see the colour, breathe in the aroma, dive into the complex layers of flavour, and fully taste the long finish of this expression – the right glassware is essential. A tulip-shaped snifter glass of is ideal. Fill the glass with Laphroaig 33-Year-Old Single Malt at room temperature. If you’re going to dilute the liquid with water, cool but un-chilled water is ideal.

On the nose aromas of pears, peaches then apricots and lots of condensed sweetness open this delicious and vintage Laphroaig up. Followed by notes of honey and rose petal, a dash of nutmeg, and finishing with ashy-dry peat. On the palate there is a sweet, syrupy, fruity mouthfeel to start, it climbs and coats the whole of your mouth. It dips to a huge second wave of aniseed, followed by creamy liquorice notes. A very long finish with lingering, alternating ashy vanilla and peaty aromas.
