About The Vineyard

Pewsey Vale Vineyard is located high in the Eden Valley at an average elevation of almost 500 metres. The vineyard sits around 250 metres above the Barossa Valley floor, where cooler temperatures create a longer and slower ripening season.

The site is defined by lean soils, rocky outcrops and a varied microclimate. These demanding growing conditions naturally limit vine vigour and encourage Riesling grapes with concentrated flavour, bright acidity and a strong mineral character.

Individual vineyard blocks are managed according to their particular altitude, aspect and growing conditions. This detailed approach allows the character of the vineyard to remain at the centre of every wine.

About Pewsey Vale And The Eden Valley

Pewsey Vale is one of Australia’s most historic Riesling vineyards. Joseph Gilbert established the property after arriving from England and planted the first vines in 1847, creating the earliest vineyard in the Eden Valley.

The property was named after the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire, England. By the time Gilbert died in 1881, the vineyard had grown considerably, although production later declined as Australian wine drinking shifted towards fortified styles.

In 1961, Geoffrey Angas Parsons and Wyndham Hill Smith began restoring the vineyard and replanted it entirely to Riesling. Cuttings were selected from quality old vines believed to have connections to the original vineyard plantings. Newer vines at Pewsey Vale have since been propagated from the historic 1961 block.

The Hill Smith family purchased the vineyard in 1970 and has remained its custodian ever since. Pewsey Vale is now devoted entirely to Riesling and has become one of the most recognised producers of the variety in Australia.

Eden Valley is one of South Australia’s leading cool climate wine regions. Its elevated vineyards, cool nights, long growing season and ancient rocky soils are particularly well suited to Riesling, helping produce wines with citrus intensity, floral perfume, natural acidity and excellent ageing potential.

Winemaking

Pewsey Vale follows a restrained winemaking approach designed to preserve the purity of the vineyard and fruit. Oak is not used, allowing the citrus, floral and mineral characters of the Riesling to remain clear and precise.

Wild fermentation has become part of the winery’s approach, supporting a gentle expression of the vineyard while maintaining freshness and varietal character. The winemaking team works closely with the vineyard manager to improve soil health, vine balance and biodiversity throughout the estate.

Pewsey Vale has carried the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia trust mark since the release of the 2021 vintage, recognising its commitment to responsible vineyard and winery practices.

Cellaring Potential

Enjoy now for its bright citrus fruit, floral aromatics and refreshing acidity, or cellar for five to ten years. With bottle age, the fresh lemon and lime flavours should gradually develop into notes of toast, beeswax, preserved citrus and gentle spice.
