About The Wine

Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 Shiraz Blend 2021 is one of the Yarra Valley’s benchmark red blends, built around old vine Shiraz with tiny additions of Viognier, Marsanne and Mataro. The 2021 vintage is complex, layered and beautifully poised, offering both sweet and savoury elements in a wine that feels polished, energetic and unmistakably Yarra Yering.

Halliday Wine Companion - 96 Points 

A blend of 96/2/1/1% shiraz/viognier/marsanne/mataro from 1969, 1980s and 1990s plantings. Fermented with whole berries and matured in barriques (30% new). A deep, bright crimson. Ripe with dark fruits, spice rack spices and a gentle waft of cedar. A rich, ripe mouthful of wine with firm, classic, old school Yarra Yering tannins. An interesting contrast between this, the Underhill Shiraz and the Carrodus Shiraz, the No. 2 red may end up being the most long lived of this terrific trio in 2021. Philip Rich

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Violets, plum, bramble, savoury spice and a touch of five spice.

Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with summer pudding fruits, layered spice, cigar box nuance and a flowing, textured palate.

Finish: Long and authoritative, with fine drying tannins, savoury grip and excellent persistence.

Serving Suggestions

A superb match for roast lamb, duck, chargrilled beef, slow-cooked meats or aged hard cheeses.

About the Winery / Producer / Region

Yarra Yering is one of the Yarra Valley’s most iconic estates, founded by Dr Bailey Carrodus. Dry Red No. 2 has long been a signature wine of the estate, centred on fruit from some of the original Shiraz plantings established in 1969, with support from later plantings from the 1980s and 1990s. The result is a wine that combines site character, old vine depth and the estate’s distinctive savoury elegance. 

Cellaring Potential

This is built to reward patience and should cellar beautifully over the medium to long term under good conditions. Its structure, fruit concentration and tannin profile point to many years of development ahead.
