Wynns Coonawarra Estate Michael Limited Release Shiraz 2015 is one of Australia’s most respected Shiraz releases, produced only in exceptional vintages from the best available Coonawarra Shiraz parcels. The 2015 vintage shows the cooler-climate elegance that makes Coonawarra Shiraz so distinctive, with vibrant red fruits, spice, concentration and a beautifully refined tannin profile.

This is a mature, cellar worthy Shiraz with poise rather than excessive weight, offering richness, complexity and freshness in equal measure.

Coonawarra shiraz is an interesting conversation. A dialogue between cool-climate precision, mid-palate warmth and a certain austerity that is far from, say, the exuberant floral persuasion of Beechworth, Yarra or the Canberra region. This wine more than compensates with a skein of energetic peppery acidity threading licorice, thyme and black and blue fruit all with a fine boned tannic needle. There is plenty of oak, but ample intensity and concentration of fruit, too, reassuring the drinker that all will gel effortlessly with patience. Ned Goodwin MW

Palate: Smooth, rich and complex, with vibrant red fruit, medium bodied concentration and a sophisticated silky texture.

Finish: Long, refined and persistent, with very fine tannins and lingering spice.

Serving Suggestions

A superb match for roast lamb, grilled beef, venison, duck, mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses. Decanting is recommended to let the wine open fully.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is one of the defining names of Australian wine and a benchmark producer for Coonawarra reds. The estate’s history is tied closely to the region’s famous terra rossa soils and long reputation for structured, long lived wines.

Michael Shiraz has a special place in the Wynns story. The first Michael, originally known as Michael Hermitage, was made from the 1955 vintage after David Wynn identified two exceptional barrels and had them bottled separately. The wine was named after his young son, Michael, and has since become one of Australia’s most recognised collectible Shiraz labels.

Cellaring Potential

Drinking beautifully now with maturity and refinement, while still holding structure for further careful cellaring. A drinking window of up to 20 years from vintage is appropriate under good conditions.
