Friulano is a signature variety of Friuli in north eastern Italy, valued for its subtle aromatics, natural texture and faintly bitter almond close. Vinea Marson’s “#10” is a skin-contact expression that leans into savoury depth while keeping the line of acidity bright. 

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Nutty alpine meadow flowers, struck-match reduction, ripe pear and quince, spice hints of nutmeg.
Palate: Bright, driven acidity, chamomile tea and citrus wrapped in nutty phenolics, with a slight sour, amaro like edge. 
Finish: Dry, savoury and persistent, finishing with the variety’s subtle almond-skin bitterness.

Food Pairing / Serving Suggestions

Prosciutto and melon, grilled prawns, calamari, chicken schnitzel, herb-roasted vegetables, or creamy pasta. Serve well chilled, then revisit as it warms slightly for extra savoury detail.

About the Winery / Producer / Region

Vinea Marson was established in 2000 on the eastern slopes of the Mount Camel Range  Heathcote, Central Victoria by winemaker Mario Marson, inspired by Italian vintages and driven by a focus on Italian varieties, particularly Sangiovese and Nebbiolo suited to the region’s ancient Cambrian soils. The estate’s two key plantings, Sotto and Sopra, were planted in 2000 and 2001 at the foot of the range, with multi clonal material chosen to build complexity and structure. 

While the Heathcote estate is the heartland, Vinea Marson also produces a small set of wines that nod directly to Mario Marson’s Friulian heritage, including Friulano. The “Friulano #10” is made in the vino macerazione, skin-contact style and is noted as a tribute to Marson’s family roots in Prata di Pordenone, where his grandfather grew and made Friulano. 

In terms of modern operations, Vinea Marson’s winemaking is carried out in a purpose built winery constructed in 2020 and inaugurated for the 2021 vintage, designed to process up to150 tonnes per year. The next generation is also active, with Madeleine Marson contributing to winemaking and the broader estate direction.
