About The Winery, Vineyards And Region

Pikes has a long family history in South Australian beverages that began in 1886, when Henry Pike established the Dorset Brewery in the Adelaide Hills. The familiar pike fish used on the labels was inspired by the fish Henry enjoyed catching in Dorset, England, and it remains a symbol of the family business today.

Pikes Wines was established in 1985 when the family purchased land in Polish Hill River and released its first Clare Valley Riesling. The winery was built on the estate in 1988, allowing the family to bring its vineyard and winemaking operations together. The Polish Hill River Estate has since grown to approximately 100 hectares and supports around twenty different grape varieties.

The fruit for The Assemblage is sourced from Polish Hill River in the Clare Valley. This cooler subregion is known for warm days, cold nights and elevated vineyard sites, conditions that help red grapes develop ripe flavour while retaining freshness, acidity and aromatic detail.

The estate vineyards are planted on gently rolling slopes with red brown clay loam over ancient slate subsoil. These soils are more than 650 million years old, naturally well drained and relatively low in nutrients. This restricts vine vigour and yields, helping produce grapes with concentrated flavour, defined tannins and clear varietal character.

The vineyards are mainly planted on easterly and south easterly aspects, with vine rows positioned to protect the grapes from intense afternoon sunshine. The surrounding hills also trap cool night air, supporting slower ripening and helping the wines retain freshness and balance.

Sustainability

Pikes uses a range of sustainable practices across its estate, including recycling winery wastewater, composting grape solids, generating solar energy and planting native trees and shrubs to improve biodiversity. Chemical use is kept to a minimum, with cover crops, straw mulch and biological weed control used wherever possible.

Cellaring Potential

Enjoy now for its bright fruit, soft tannins and generous texture, or cellar for up to five years from vintage. Further bottle age should allow the fruit, spice and savoury characters to become more integrated.
