Schlenkerla Erle Schwarzbier Bottle 500ml

“Dark, roasty and gently smoky, with alderwood malt giving this Schwarzbier a softer edge.”

Schlenkerla Erle Schwarzbier is a dark German lager from Bamberg with a wonderfully different take on Schlenkerla’s famous smoked beer style. Instead of the traditional beechwood smoke, the malt is dried over alderwood, producing a finer, more restrained smoky character. Add plenty of roasted malt flavour and a surprisingly easy drinking 4.2% ABV, and you have a Schwarzbier that is dark in colour, big on flavour and beautifully balanced.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Roasted malt, dark bread and gentle smoke with subtle coffee and toasted grain notes.

Palate: Rich roasted malt flavours with a smooth, complex alderwood smokiness that is softer and less spicy than Schlenkerla’s classic Rauchbier.

Finish: Dry, roasty and clean with lingering toasted malt and a delicate smoky character.

Beer Style

Smoked Schwarzbier / Black Lager.

About Schlenkerla

Schlenkerla is one of Bamberg’s great historic breweries and one of the world’s best known producers of traditional Rauchbier. Its brewing heritage is closely tied to the old practice of drying malt over wood fires, creating the unmistakable smoked flavours for which the brewery has become famous.

For Aecht Schlenkerla Erle, the brewery takes a different approach. The smoked malt is dried over alderwood rather than the traditional beechwood fire, creating a finer and more complex smoke character that is noticeably softer and less spicy. A high proportion of roasted malt gives the beer its deep, almost black colour and pronounced roasted flavour. A great option if you are curious about smoked beer but want something a little gentler than the classic Schlenkerla Märzen.
