Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel is a beautifully traditional dark lager with plenty of malt depth, but without drifting into anything heavy or sweet.

It pours a deep mahogany colour with a golden brown shimmer, showing dark bread, caramel, toasted grain and gentle roasted notes from the malt. The palate is smooth and rounded, with soft malt richness balanced by a clean lager finish. Ayinger brews it from five different malts, which helps give the beer its layered, full flavoured character.

This is a great choice if you want something darker than a Helles but still crisp enough to drink like a proper Bavarian lager. Plenty of malt, plenty of flavour, no need to turn it into dessert.

About The Brewery

Privatbrauerei Ayinger is based in Aying, south east of Munich, and is one of Bavaria’s best known independent family breweries.

Altbairisch Dunkel sits firmly in the traditional side of the range. It is a bottom fermented dark Export beer with a deep mahogany colour that comes entirely from the malt rather than colouring. The brewery uses five different malts to build the beer’s depth and smooth texture.

It is exactly the sort of beer that shows why Bavaria does dark lager so well. Rich enough to be interesting, clean enough to keep drinking.
