Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is proper Coonawarra Cabernet. Deep, structured and full of dark fruit, but still beautifully balanced and composed.

Cassis, blackberry and black cherry lead the way, with bay leaf, mint, cedar, tobacco and a little forest floor adding plenty of savoury detail. The palate is full bodied and concentrated, with bright acidity and firm fine grained tannins giving the wine serious length and shape.

Bowen Estate is one of Coonawarra’s benchmark family producers, and the 2024 marks the estate’s 50th vintage. It has also received 95 points from Huon Hooke and 95 points from Nick Ryan, making it a very strong example of classic Coonawarra Cabernet at a still sensible price.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Cassis, blackberry, black cherry, bay leaf, mint, cedar and tobacco.

Palate: Full bodied and concentrated with dark berry fruit, savoury herbs, bright acidity and firm fine grained tannins.

Finish: Long and composed with lingering cassis, black cherry, cedar, tobacco and a gently savoury edge.

About The Winery

Bowen Estate is a family owned Coonawarra producer established by Doug and Joy Bowen, with the vineyard planted in 1972 and the first vintage produced in 1975. Today, daughter Emma Bowen leads the winemaking, continuing the family’s long focus on classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the region’s famous terra rossa soils.

The 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon is a particularly important release because it marks 50 vintages of Bowen Estate. It shows exactly why the winery has such a loyal following: ripe fruit, regional mint and bay leaf, proper structure and the sort of tannins that give the wine real cellaring potential.

It is classic Coonawarra without feeling old fashioned. Plenty of pedigree, plenty of flavour, and thankfully no need to explain terra rossa for twenty minutes before opening the bottle.

Cellaring Potential

Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 is already impressive, but it is clearly built to develop further in bottle.

Recommended drinking window: 2028 to 2041.

Collector’s Note

The 2024 has received several strong reviews, including 95 points from Huon Hooke, who ranked it among the leading 2024 Coonawarra Cabernets, and 95 points from Nick Ryan, who praised its classic regional character and precise tannin structure.

Vinous also rated the wine 94 points, describing it as a bold, powerful Coonawarra Cabernet with blackcurrant, black liquorice, black olive and a long finish.
