Pikes Dogwalk Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a classic Clare Cabernet with plenty of dark fruit, freshness and structure, but none of the hard edges that can make young Cabernet feel like a patience test.

Blackcurrant, mulberry and red fruits lead the way, with subtle leafy notes, cigar box and a little charry oak underneath. The palate is medium bodied and beautifully balanced, with fine tannins and enough fruit concentration to carry the wine without making it feel heavy.

Why buy it? Because this is a proper Clare Valley Cabernet at a very sensible level. It is approachable now, but Pikes also gives it up to 10 years of cellaring potential, so it is equally happy on the dinner table or quietly waiting in the cellar.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Blackcurrant, mulberry, red fruits, subtle leafy notes and cigar box.

Palate: Medium bodied with red and black fruit, fresh acidity and fine well integrated tannins.

Finish: Long and balanced with lingering cassis, mulberry, savoury oak and a clean dry grip.

About The Winery

Pikes Wines is a family owned Clare Valley producer based at Polish Hill River and has been making wine since 1984. While Riesling may get most of the headlines, Cabernet Sauvignon has always been an important part of the Pikes story and remains one of the varieties the region handles particularly well.

The 2023 Dogwalk is estate grown and comes from a cool vintage that gave the fruit a long, slow ripening period. That helped build colour and flavour while keeping natural acidity fresh, which is exactly what good Clare Cabernet needs.

It is polished, structured and easy to understand, which is a much better outcome than Cabernet that spends its first five years trying to prove how serious it is.

Cellaring Potential

Pikes Dogwalk Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is drinking well now, but the fine tannin structure and fruit concentration give it plenty of life ahead. Pikes suggests cellaring for up to 10 years under good storage conditions.
