Stift Goettweig Messwein Gruner Veltliner 2025 750ml

“Classic Austrian Grüner with green apple, citrus, fresh herbs and delicate peppery spice.”

Stift Göttweig Messwein Grüner Veltliner 2025 is a light, dry and wonderfully refreshing Austrian white with a history that stretches back considerably further than most bottles on the shelf.

Fresh green and red apple lead the way, joined by citrus zest, meadow herbs and the delicate peppery spice that is such a signature of Grüner Veltliner. The palate is crisp and elegant rather than heavy, with fresh acidity and a clean, gently spicy finish.

The interesting bit is the name. Messwein means Mass wine, and this has been produced by the Benedictine monastery of Stift Göttweig for centuries. It is not merely a clever label dreamed up at a marketing meeting, which already puts it ahead of quite a few wine names.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Green apple, red apple and fresh citrus with delicate meadow herbs.

Palate: Light and dry with crisp apple, citrus and the subtle peppery spice characteristic of Grüner Veltliner.

Finish: Fresh and elegant with lingering citrus, apple and gentle savoury spice.

Serving Suggestions

Excellent with schnitzel, grilled chicken, pork, fresh seafood and vegetable dishes. It is also particularly good with lighter Asian dishes where its freshness and subtle spice come into their own.

Serve nicely chilled at around 8°C to 10°C.

About The Winery

Stift Göttweig is a Benedictine abbey overlooking Austria's Kremstal region, with a winemaking tradition extending back centuries. The estate remains particularly associated with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the two varieties that have helped establish this part of Lower Austria as one of the country's important white wine regions.

Messwein has an unusual place within the range. As wine intended for Mass, its production is subject to church requirements concerning purity and must be made with episcopal permission.

Fortunately, you do not need a cathedral, a choir or even particularly good Sunday behaviour to open a bottle.

Cellaring Potential

This is primarily about youthful freshness rather than long term cellaring.

Enjoy now or over the next few years while the apple, citrus and delicate spice remain bright. Current 2025 listings suggest drinking through approximately 2028 to 2030.
