Holyman Pinot Noir 2024 is a deeply expressive Tasmanian Pinot Noir made from a tiny block of mature estate vines in the Tamar Valley. Dark cherry, raspberry and cranberry are layered with rose petals, mint, cinnamon, forest floor and subtle mushroom, supported by fine tannins and bright mineral freshness.

You'll enjoy this Pinot Noir for both fragrance and serious structure. It offers vibrant fruit and a silky texture for drinking now, yet the fine tannins, fresh acidity and savoury depth give it excellent potential to develop in the cellar. Small production, mature dry grown vines and careful minimal intervention winemaking make this a special choice for collectors and lovers of premium Tasmanian Pinot Noir.

The warmer 2024 season produced a richer and more powerful wine than the previous vintage, while retaining the balance, freshness and firm structure that define the Holyman style. At only 12 percent alcohol, it delivers impressive flavour and presence without heaviness.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Dark cherry, raspberry and cranberry, with rose petals, mint, cinnamon, forest floor and subtle smoky oak.

Palate: Fresh and composed, with red cherry, dark raspberry and plum supported by fine, firm tannins. Mushroom, Earl Grey tea and crushed stone notes add savoury complexity and mineral definition.

Finish: Long, focused and persistent, with lingering red fruit, florals, spice and chalky tannins.

Halliday Wine Companion - 95 Points

Deep ruby with characters of dark cherry, dried cranberry, wild strawberry and raspberry pip along with spice, wisps of struck match, wildflowers, tamari, cold tea, game meats and subtle crushed herbs. I like the energy here; there's a distinct tension to its travel on the palate, with sleek fruit, crushed riverstone tannins and a wicked briny acid line providing detail and cadence. Such great drinking. Dave Brookes

Serving Suggestions

Pair with roast duck, quail, mushroom risotto, roast chicken, pork, grilled salmon or dishes featuring truffle and wild mushrooms. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also make it an excellent match for charcuterie and soft washed rind cheeses.

About The Jack Block Vineyard

The Holyman Pinot Noir comes from a tiny 0.6 hectare estate block known as Jack. The vines were planted in 1986 and were approximately 39 years old for the 2024 release. They are dry grown and deliberately kept at low yields, helping produce fruit with concentration, complexity and firm natural structure.

The vineyard lies in the Tamar Valley of northern Tasmania, less than one kilometre from the Tamar River. Its elevation ranges from below 10 metres to approximately 30 metres above sea level. The nearby river and cool Tasmanian climate moderate temperatures, supporting gradual ripening and helping Pinot Noir retain perfume, acidity and freshness.

The vines are managed individually according to their strength and crop load. Joe and Lou Holyman restrict the number of bunches carried by each shoot, with the estate averaging approximately 4.5 tonnes per hectare. Herbicides have not been used for many years, while minimal sprays and selected biodynamic preparations are used to support soil and vine health.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand picked and carefully sorted in the vineyard. Around 70 percent whole bunch fruit was retained for fermentation, bringing floral lift, spice and the chalky tannin structure that gives this wine its distinctive shape.

Following a seven day cold soak, fermentation began naturally with wild yeast. The wine matured in French oak, with approximately 30 percent new oak and the remainder in older barrels. It was bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural texture, fruit purity and vineyard character.

About Holyman And Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise Wine Company is a family owned winery operated by Joe and Lou Holyman in the heart of the Tamar Valley. They purchased the vineyard in 2004 after recognising the potential of its mature vines and sheltered riverside position. An estate winery was completed in 2008, allowing the wines to be grown and made on the property.

The Holyman wines are not reserve versions of the Stoney Rise range. They represent a distinct style inspired by traditional Burgundian winemaking, with greater use of whole bunch fermentation, mature estate fruit and carefully selected French oak.

Joe and Lou focus on minimal intervention wines with freshness, savoury character and moderate alcohol. The small production Holyman Pinot Noir has become one of the estate’s most sought after releases and a recognised expression of premium northern Tasmanian Pinot Noir.

Cellaring Potential

Enjoy now after decanting for its dark cherry, raspberry, perfume and mineral freshness, or cellar for five to ten years. Under suitable conditions, it should continue developing until approximately 2035 and potentially beyond.

With bottle age, expect the fresh fruit and floral notes to evolve towards dried herbs, forest floor, mushroom, spice and deeper earthy complexity.
