The pride of Chile and Argentina is the robust inky Malbec grape. While it hails from southwest France and is planted in Bordeaux, Loire Valley, northeast Italy and California; its most famous single varietal examples are from Mendoza where it thrives in the higher elevation of the Andes and showcases plump, dark fruit flavours and a smoky finish. Malbec is predominantly a blending grape in Australia to soften a Cabernet Sauvignon and integral to a Right Bank Bordeaux when paired with Merlot and Petit Verdot.
